Drawing Styles and How I Got Stuck

As I start working on my first collection, a woodland/mushroom/beetle theme, I drew a bunch of mushrooms in my sketchbook, scanned them in and started editing them in Illustrator. Then I drew some more on my iPad using a split screen so I could look at inspiration photos online while drawing. I started to notice a stark difference: the early mushrooms I drew were more simple, with solid colors, big white spots and simple line details. The mushrooms from my iPad sketching had many more details, more texture. After looking at them for a couple days and thinking about them, I decided to sort.  You can see the more detailed mushrooms are on the left with the more simple mushrooms on the right. My thoughts are all over the place on this... If I go forward with the inking style on the left, I can't use a plain colored background, and that's scary. I'd have to add more texture. If I use the style on the right, it's not quite as interesting but fits in better with my style from...
